Click to enlarge Bernau is located in what is considered to be one of Europe's most beautiful "Hochtals" (high-lying valleys) in the southern Black Forest mountains. The valley spans 8km and boasts a network of walking routes of over 100km in length. Bernau - with its healthy air, crystal-clear springs and streams - forms part of the beautiful Black Forest nature reserve.

Ideally suited for romantic walks through tranquil meadows and woodlands, or a hike that takes one all the way up to the 1415m "Herzogenhorn", the state of Baden-Württemberg's second highest mountain top from which one can enjoy a panoramic view of the mountains in the Black Forest and in the distance the Swiss Alps. Click to enlarge The Black Forest is an all-year-round destination with four clearly-defined seasons:
  • Beautiful springs for mountain walks;
  • Hot summers with flowering meadows;
  • Autumns highlighted with the majestic colouring of forest leafs;
  • Crisp, clear winter days with snowy landscapes.

A wide variety of activities - for all ages and any fitness levels - may be enjoyed all year round, such as Nordic walking, mountain climbing, hill walking, mountain-biking, lake swimming, tennis, hang- and sky-gliding, cross country skiing and (ideally suited for beginners) downhill skiing.

Click to enlarge With its gentle slopes, Bernau is the ideal destination for beginners to start skiing. It also has the best tracks (50km) for cross country skiing while each year in February it plays host to the European Huskey Sleight Racing Championships. For art lovers there's the famous Hans Thoma Museum, with a permanent exhibition in the townhall of works by this well-known painter and poet who was born and lived in Bernau (1839-1924).

The Resenhof Museum - located in a traditional 200-year-old farm house - exhibits traditional crafts, farming traditions and woodwork, while traditional bread-baking workshops give visitors a memorable insight into the lives of people 200 years ago. The nearby town of St. Blasien - with its famous Dome Cathedral and Jesuit College - regularly sees musical recitals and performances being held, as well as a charming, nostalgic Christkindle Market in the pre-Christmas season.
